They transmit the sound from the vinyl to the amp and have to put up with a lot of abuse so needles need to not only be sensitive but also tough and very hardwearing.
Some popular makes of cartridge are Ortofon and Stanton.
Spend as much as you can on your cartridges - you won't regret it.
