Haemochromatosis is an inherited condition which results in a build-up of iron levels in the body, often over a period of many years. It can lead to unpleasant symptoms such as fatigue, sore joints, weight loss and ‘brain fog’. Haemochromatosis can affect people of any age. Symptoms usually start between 30-60yrs and the condition seems to be particularly prevalent in Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
There is currently no cure for haemochromatosis, but there are treatments that can reduce the amount of iron in the body and reduce the risk of damage. These include ‘blood removal’, or donation.
