Robert Owen became the owner of cotton mills at New Lanark in Scotland in 1800. This became the centre of a community, with a chapel, school and cottages for the workers. Owen used New Lanark to introduce his plans for living and working through the principle of co-operation.
The Co-op is owned by the people for the people. It is an example of working people organising to improve their lives. It was founded in Rochdale by a pioneering group of workers and based on ideas of Robert Owen. Today it is a major worldwide organisation.
