This vase dates from about 1800 and belonged to Sir William Boyd Dawkins, a Victorian archaeologist, geologist, collector and a curator at The Manchester Museum. The emperor Jiaqing ruled China from 1796 to 1820, a time when the introduction of transfer printing in European porcelain manufacture was making it hard for hand-painted Chinese imports to compete. The vase is displayed in the Boyd Dawkins Study at Buxton Museum and Art Gallery. The collections belonging to Boyd Dawkins and his friend and student Dr J. Wilfred Jackson make up the heart of Buxton Museum & Art Gallery's collections.
