Silicon chip disc

Contributed by David Brown

The highly polished silicon disc is a thing of beauty and encompasses a history of technology looking back to the simple transistor and forward to micro-miniturisation and the modern multi-functional chips. A simple looking object but one which encapsulates the history of the modern world. The chip has changed our lives simplifying communication at all levels from the sophisticated i-phones to the development of communications in developing countries. Globalistion suddenly was a practical concept freed from the physical limitations of geography and time. Systems have developed to allow automatic plane landings and fly by wire craft leading to space exploration as well as the ubiquitous microwave and digital scales. Few objects can claim to have affected all our lives and there can be few places on earth which have not been touched by the micro-chip.
