This banner was made for the Ipswich branch of the Dock, Wharf, Riverside and General Labourers' Union. The Union formed after the London Dock Strike of 1889.
The heraldic images on one side of the banner show how central trade with countries of the British Empire was for Britain's economy.
The other side of the banner (pictured here), with worker and employer shaking hands, indicates that the union wanted to be conciliatory.
Materials: Two coloured damask-woven silk fabric with hand painted images in oil based media.
