Carpet beater

Contributed by ´óÏó´«Ã½ London Event

I live in a typical victoian terrace house in East Dulwich. We found this in the cellar when we moved into the house. It was used before the days people had vaccuum cleaners. Carpets and rugs would be hung over a line in the garden and hit with the carpet beater causing clouds of dust until it was thought clean enough. If you could afford it you would have a maid of all work to do this for you. I have even used this recently myself, for my door mat, draping it over a wall!
