By 1924 Morris was the UK's leading car manufacturer with a 51% share of the market.The Morris Motor Company was started in 1910 by bicycle manufacturer William Morris, later Lord Nuffield. The factory at Cowley, south of Oxford opened in 1913 and production began of the company's first car the 2-seater Morris Oxford Bullnose. During the next 72 years, the name Morris became synonymous with the British car industry, producing some of the nation's best loved cars. The Morris 10 was first produced in 1933 and was offered with an optional sunroof. During the Second World War a pick up version was produced for military use. They were also assembled in India as the Hindustan 10. In 1938 the Morris Motor Company combined with Riley and MG. By then the Cowley works was the City's largest employer. The Minor was introduced to the range in 1928 and soon became the Company's best seller. Today the Cowley site is home to the iconic Mini now manufactured by BMW and exported worldwide.
