The puppet is known as the Tramp Clown and the attention to detail is fascinating - notice the unstuck sole on his shoe, the ragged nature of his trousers and jacket, and the very hairy chest!
Malvern's famous Lanchester puppeteers began performing in 1935. Waldo and Muriel Lanchester hand-crafted numerous puppets in their workshops and wrote many plays. They held regular performances in Malvern and took their plays and puppets further afield, to become the country's leading puppet company. In 1938 the Lanchester Marionette Theatre performed before King George VI and the royal family at Buckingham Palace.
