George Back took this notebook of Inuit vocabulary on his expedition to the Arctic in search of lost explorer, John Ross. The book includes a native map of the coast from the mouth of Thlew-eee-choh-deezeth, the Great Fish River, now known as Back River. The notebook throws light on Back's concerns - it includes phrases which literally translate as 'European alive he is' and 'European gone away he is'.
