This object is my Great-Grandparents' Marriage Certificate.
From the certificate I learned that they were married in Cuba for what we thought was an arranged marriage. I found out that they might have left their countries because there was a big war between Russia and Poland and America was "The Land of the Free" and economically booming. There was also the rise of communism in Russia after the 1917 revolution. My great-grandfather was from Russia and was 23 at the time. My great-grandmother was from Poland and was 24 at the time.
The certificate was made on the 2nd of December 1927 in Havana, the Capital of Cuba. It is in Spanish because Cuba was a recently independent former Spanish Colony in the Latin American Caribbean. Although Cuba was an independent country it was still dependent on the USA.
In 1924 there was an act passed by the US government to restrict immigration called the Johnson-Reed Act. This Act made it difficult for people from Eastern Europe, especially Jews, Italians or Slavs, to come into the USA. However this act had no restrictions on Latin America. I think this was why my great-grandparents went to Cuba to get married.
