Dating from the early 17th century, this helmet is of the type made in England and the low countries, though has undergone modification at a later date. Burgonets were lightweight helmets decorated with a metal fin on top. They were very common during this period because they were less expensive than closed-face helmets, though offered less protection.

This helmet was one of the original artifacts on display in the first Ballymoney Museum in 1860. It came from the collection of James Bell, a local antiquarian and land steward on the Leslie Hill estate. When Bell died his collection was auctioned. A large portion was purchased by James Cramsie, a local solicitor, who donated his portion to the people of the town, and so Ballymoney Museum was established. The museum is now celebrating its 150th year, making it one of the oldest provincial museums in Ireland.
