The Spirit of Manchester- " Progress"
This bronze statuette was commissioned in 1977
to serve as the theme award for the Lord Mayor's Parade
arranged to celebrate the centenary of Manchester Town Hall.
The object stands 36 cm high on a marble base, and was
sculpted by John Blakely in the nearby town of Stockport.
A hexagonal nut, resting on the roots of a tree, represents
the engineering skills which started the industrial revolution,
arising from this is a trunk, in the shape of a cotton bobbin,
symbolizing the city's emblematic history, leading to a crown
of leaves and branches embracing the eccentric wheel of fortune
and future progress.
