A.R.P.box

Contributed by Virginia Davies

Our object is a black metal box with a red stripe and A.R.P. written in bold letters on the front of the box. On investigation, we discovered that the box was given to our school at the end of World War 11. On enquiry we learnt that the boxes were mass produced in factories all over Britain and were used by air raid wardens as first aid boxes. The contents included, bandages, some medicines, antiseptic ointments, splints and tags. The box was kept in the office of the air raid warden and used during air raids or accidents. A.R.P. stands for Air Raid Precautions and the box would have been carried by the air raid warden in emergencies.
Today, we can find first aid boxes in every shop, factory, school and home. The contents may be slightly different but the basic items are still the same.
