It is now remembered for the disastrous venture to colonise Darien in Panama in 1698. This failure cost 2,000 lives and lost Scotland a quarter of its liquid Capital, forcing the Bank of Scotland to suspend payment to its creditors a Scottish banking crisis dwarfing that of recent times! Some historians believe it led many Scots to support the Act of Union and in 1707.
