In the 1970s three world-class cricketers, Viv Richards, Joel Garner and Ian Botham, transformed Somerset County Cricket Club. For the first time in the club's long history the Somerset team became formidable trophy winners. They won the Gillette Cup and the Sunday League in 1979. Then they went on to win the Benson & Hedges Cup in 1981 and 1982, and the NatWest Trophy in 1983.
Garner was a fast bowler capable of demolishing an opposing team's batting line-up. He also played for the West Indies, his national team, which went for 15 years without losing a Test series. Joel Garner was one of the tallest bowlers ever to play Test cricket and became an international symbol of sporting achievement.
