The Westland Lynx is a military helicopter designed and built by Westland Helicopters in Yeovil, Somerset. The Lynx is in service across the world and has been a mainstay of the British Armed Forces for almost forty years. It is used in a variety of roles including anti-tank, search and rescue and anti-submarine warfare. In 1986 a modified Lynx broke the airspeed record for helicopters (400.87 kph). That record still stands.

The breakthrough in vertical flight came at the end of the nineteenth century with the development of the internal combustion engine. Though many problems had to be overcome, progress was rapid by the 1920s and 1930s. Westland's was established as a separate company in 1935 and today operates as AugustaWestland.
