Inuit kayaks are highly efficient hunting boats. They are made specially to fit the person that will use them. The kayak on display in the Polar Museum is slightly different from the model pictured. Built by Greelandic Inuit, it was given to the museum by Austine Courtauld, an Arctic surveyor who used it when he crossed the Greenland ice cap. Hunting equipment (harpoons, lances, bird darts, racks for harpoon lines and floats) and other accessories, including a double bladed paddle, are secured to the deck.
