Episode 52
The tour group arrive in Mingulay and, along with our trio, learn about MacPhee's Hill. One story says it is so named after a MacPhee, sent to the island by MacNeil of Barra, who discovered all residents dead and was left marooned by his shipmates who feared infection if he returned aboard. MacPhee is said to have climbed the hill every day for a year in the hope of being rescued, until he was eventually granted land by MacNeil when the island was resettled.
"Inntinneach dha-rìribh", (Very interesting), comments Eà irdsidh. Marsaili's mind however is whirring, thinking about her financial predicament. Sìleas calls them both over. She has been chatting to members of the tour group who mention that hearing some traditional unaccompanied Gaelic singing would round their trip off nicely. Sìleas suggests Marsaili and Eà irdsidh duet, like in choir days. Marsaili agrees, singing can only help lift her mood.
They begin to really enjoy the performance, taking requests by the end! Marsaili's day is about to get much better. The group have had a whip-round and hand EÃ irdsidh and Marsaili a welcome sum by way of thanks for their outdoor performance.
With her economic outlook now so much brighter, a jubilant Marsaili jokes, laughs and talks away to Eà irdsidh. Talks in rather hushed tones at times, it seems to Sìleas...
