Kulwant Bhamrah and Sardara Gill, the core of Apna Sangeet have been singing and performing for almost 25 years, making them one of the longest surviving traditional British Bhangra acts of the modern era. In 1979 both Bhamrah and Sardara started their singing careers in the band Bhujangay Group, but decided to form their own band with their own unique beats in late November 1983. Apna Sangeet or 'Our Music' was born.
Renowned for their uncompromising originality, Apna Sangeet's lyrics and music were largely written, composed and arranged within the band. They released 10 albums, with their hits including 'Mera Yaar Vajaye Dhol' and 'Apna Sangeet Vajeh Apna Sangeet'.
Apna Sangeet succeeded in recording the first Asian promotional video to be televised on the 大象传媒 in 1989 for the track 'Chakdey Phattey' and were officially the first Asian band to play in the Southern hemisphere performing in New Zealand and Australia in 1988.
They hold an impressive cabinet full of awards, including UK Asian Pop Awards' 1986/87 Best Upcoming Band, 1996 Best Live Band, plus eight Gold and Platinum Discs.
What many believed to be an end to an era, Apna Sangeet announced that they were to split in 1995, but due to high public demand, in the summer of 1996 the lead singers Kulwant and Sardara decided to continue by replacing some of the departed band members.
The newly named Apna Group continues to evolve as one of British Bhangra's most well respected and successful institutes. The track 'Apna Style Boliyaan' is from their Silver Jubilee Album Diamond Cuts, due for release this year.
