Spanking New at London's Drill Hall - May 19 2003

For the seventh and last show in the first series of Spanking New, 大象传媒 7 sent along a photographer.
The show starts at 4pm, when the SMs (Studio Managers - the sound engineers), Jill and Alick, begin to rig the studio. Not just for the performers; the audience have to be mic'd up enough that we can hear their lovely laughter, but not so loud that we can hear them rustling their smuggled in crisp packets. They set up the SADiE recording system, which will hold the shows until they are edited, burned onto CD, and played to the unsuspecting public.
From then until the show starts, the stage and studio are prepared, a soundcheck is done followed by quick interviews with all the acts.
At 8 pm the show finally starts. After the producer has warned the audience of the danger of mobile phones (switch them off when you come to recordings, please) and informed them of the safety regulations, it's time for Mr Ince to do his thing, for about four hours (edited down to three and a half minutes of the funniest nouns). He introduces Yorkshireman Alun Cochrane, who is very tall and very funny. Karen Cockfield follows, the pronunciation of her name meaning she will never lack for comedy material.
After the interval (edited out for time reasons - fifteen minutes of dead air being less riveting that you'd imagine), Robin introduces Stan Stanley, whose ears work differently to ours when it comes to the phrase "War on Terror". Finally, Andy Zaltzman rounds off a fabulous evening with a hysterical, satirical routine.
And so, at ten (hopefully), to the bar...
