We are a five-piece band based in Berkshire and Surrey. We formed in April 2001 by the singer and lyric writer Mel Spicer with the drummer Mark Potter and bass player Ian Spicer. We have had some changes in our line-up since we formed the band, and we now have Dan Bowtell with us as our guitar player and Leonie Avenant all the way from South Africa on the keyboard. Leonie has had some success in her own right with songs that she has written, currently being aired on South African radio. She also made an appearance on a recent Keane video. Over the past couple of years we have played regularly at many venues including outdoors festivals and events such as Guilfest, which is one of the biggest music festivals in the south of England. We had to compete with The Darkness on the main stage while we played on another stage. We have also received airplay on local and national radio. We've performed a live session on The Tom Robinson Show on 大象传媒 6 Music, followed by an interview with the ex-rocker. More recently we have had chart entries into the unsigned chart on extraplay.com and have been played on a number of internet and FM radio stations including Kent radio and 96.4 The Eagle radio, based in Surrey. We play totally original material and write as a band, although the lyrical content and vocal melodies tend to come from Mel's own hand. Mel's voice has been likened to a mixture of The Cranberries, Suzanne Vega and P.J. Harvey, but as a band we have our own distinctive sound. Check out our website on www.sunsoma.co.uk for news, gigs, reviews and free downloads of our music. Mission statement: We aim to create songs using catchy grooves and great melodies to inspire and entertain. Influences: Our influences are wide. They vary from Paul Weller to Kate Rusby, The Foo Fighters to The Cranberries, U2 to the Red Hot Chili Peppers. |
