Turning Japanese with OK Tokyo

By Hana Thomas
Back from their travels through time, OK Tokyo finally landed on Saturday night (21 April 2007) as they played their long awaited debut gig in their Reading hometown at the Plug'n'Play. Read the review.

Looking like three mad scientists, the 'Lords of Adventure Rock' delivered with spunk, attitude and the kind of sheer brilliance that confirmed that they're as exciting as the hype has led us all to believe.

"We've unleashed the T-Rex!"
Sammy Tokyo

Commanding the biggest crowd of the night, anticipation swells as the boys set up.

After a couple of punchy numbers, Teleport and Monte Carlo, it's clear why OK Tokyo are the most innovative act around, as they honestly don't sound like anything else out there.

Sammy Tokyo enthusiastically declares: "We've unleashed the T-Rex!", which is met with cheers from the room. He's clearly won them over.

Front man Sammy, who combines lead vocals while shredding the guitar, was tuned in and turned on as he thrashes out energetic riffs and ingenious lyrics.

Bassist Jonny Tokyo and drummer Matty Tokyo provide a supremely solid backbeat that powers each song perfectly. In fact, it was great to be able to dance to a band who still remain dirty (filthy in fact) and totally rocking. Can't wait for an album!

Complemented and enhanced live by slick backing vocalists and glitzy sequins, the boys produce a flawless performance.

The only glitch of the night is that they were let down by sound quality.

People towards the front of the room had the advantage of actually hearing a decent live mix, however as I walked towards the back of the room the sound was quite nasty.

Bands can sometimes set themselves apart from the rest by their pure energy and stage presence.听OK Tokyo does this, and more, because the songs are superbly and intelligently crafted while keeping a thoroughly British sense of humour about them.

Exciting times are surely ahead for the boys who are rumoured to have attracted a lot of industry attention, both in the UK and internationally.

And for their army of fans? They are left craving more OK Tokyo-flavoured meat. What a debut show.

These boys are the real deal.
