The Colours at the Fez

Tonight theCOLOURS launch their new single, aptly titled Something New, along with support from other local acts The Vice, The Le Brocks and Wire Jesus.

The latter caught my attention with their use of a cello, something I've not really seen used as a lead instrument in rock 'n' roll since Isobel Campbell left Belle and Sebastian, and in this case it sounded excellent as did the rest of the band.

The superb turnout at the Fez shows what a fanbase theCOLOURS have built since the four-piece听 first began making music together three years ago.听

From the first song they play, the dominant (but not overblown) bass and drums hits me.听

The rhythm section drives the vibe forwards during a set of songs that flow effortlessly into each other.听

The dynamic drumming combined with an amazingly full range bass produces a tightness I doubt Harry Houdini himself could escape from.

The synergy and coherence spreads to the rest of the band, with the vocals soaring majestically in a fashion not dissimilar to that of Muse's Matt Bellamy or Keane's Tom Chaplain.听

Yet Tom Pickford's voice is distinct by virtue of occasional fragile inflections, reminiscent of Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke.听

The guitars vary from overdriven washes of fuzz that juxtapose beautifully with the clean piano tones, to the beauty in repetition that often characterises the solo lines, showing how less can be so much more.

The use of keyboard also varies dramatically, providing melodic introductions and interludes, as well as crescendos that leads to a full-on rhythmic onslaught on tracks such as the first encore January.

The finale - a cover of The Killers' All These Thing's I've Done leaves the crowd on a high.

Possibly due to the venue acoustics, the more nuanced elements to theCOLOURS songs gets a little lost on occasion tonight, but this doesn't stop the dancefloor filling up for the whole set.

Something New is a slight change in direction for the band.听The tune itself has a poppier edge without losing any of the dramatic quality that characterises much of theCOLOURS' music.

It's an epic and powerful sound, or as one band member describes it, "music that demands a bigger venue".
