Giving your all for 100% Reading

Why does Laurence Hoare love the Reading music scene so much that he's taken out a bank loan to fund a local bands compilation CD? 大象传媒 Berkshire chats to the man behind 100% Reading.

"You feel a little bit like John Peel," says Laurence Hoare.

Now for a 36-year-old web designer from Basingstoke to come out with a comment like that is quite unusual. Until you realise that he is the brains behind a new local band compilation CD called 100 % Reading.

"There's so many international-standard bands on the CD who I'd never have found, and other people need to be told that they're there!"

Laurence Hoare

The CD features 35 bands and artists all hailing from, you guessed it, Reading.
It's released ahead of the Easter weekend on Thursday 20 March 2008 and can be bought at a series of live launch nights.

"I did one in my home town in Basingstoke," says Laurence of his 100% idea, "when it was finished and launched and in the shops I just missed the buzz".

He adds: "Discovering a new band is absolutely where it's at. Finding new music is easily the most rewarding part of it."

And his rewards are being reaped following six months of work and taking out a loan to finance the project. Now that's dedication for you!

"I think it's a wonderful concept and I'd like to take it around the country," says Laurence, who moved to Basingstoke from Reading 15 years ago.

"I had this production line idea of doing one a month - and Southampton is the next one that I'm going to have a look at, but I've had to put that on hold because Reading has just consumed me because there's so much there."

Gigs

The selected bands on the double compilation span the genres from the cool indie rock of My Luminaries and the synth disco punk of Hello Wembley to the funk-infused grooves of Junkyard Scientists and the hip-hop rhymes of Jonny Virgo.

"In Basingstoke indie people started talking to the dance people, the hip hop people started talking to the rock people. People heard music that they hadn't heard before."

Laurence, a former drummer, trawled the internet for Berkshire bands to feature on his compilation, as well as spending many an hour scouting at live music nights.

"It was searching through MySpace, 'Googling' bands, recommendations through bands, going to see them live myself.

"What tends to happen is that you find somebody good and they attract good people around them. For example The Trouble With Me are good friends with The Noyze, Junkyard Scientists are good friends with Johnny Virgo - quality attracts quality."

Despite the loan and the long working hours the over-riding impression Laurence gives is that he genuinely loves supporting the local band scene.

"It's completely DIY - I've done everything myself. I've even made a video.

"There's so many international-standard bands on the CD who I'd never have found, and other people need to be told that they're there!"
