Student reviewer Jessica Hughes was there. Starting off their UK tour supporting Joe Lean and the Jing Jang Jong, Reading band Beggars played Reading University students union on Thursday 24 April 2008. The four piece opened with their Leonard Cohen cover and new single The Future, (available now on limited edition 7" and download). I was lucky enough to have a chat with the guys before the show and I asked them where they see themselves in the future. They simply replied "not here". The band have reason to be cocky though. With a strong fan base, great supporting opportunities and a spot at this year's Glastonbury Festival, stardom is within reach for Justin from Beggars They also told me they are currently recording tracks for their debut album which should be on the shelves in the near future. With their catchy tunes, taking influence from everyone from The Rolling Stones to The The gig itself was a short set which gave a great insight into the catchy indie-pop sound the band have to offer. With punchy tracks like You And Me the band wouldn't sound out of place mentioned in the same breath as hit bands like the Kooks. With song Dear Boss, which I was humming for days after, the band won over the entire crowd by the end of the set. Their performance was engaging and their upbeat. Their wide awake songs and stage presence had the audience, by the second song, struggling not to be the first to dance.
