1.The course is one mile and 550 yards long. That's just a bit longer than the usual international rowing distance. Usually rowing is a multi lane affair. However, at Henley there are only ever two boats racing each other.

2. Races take about seven minutes to complete, but they are started every five minutes. That means for much of the time there is more than one race on the water at the same time.

3. The boats set off from the famous Temple Island and head down towards Henley Bridge. The races finish at Poplar Point. The town side of the river is known as the Buckinghamshire or Oxfordshire bank. All the tents and hospitality areas are on the Berkshire bank.

4. The first regatta took place on a single afternoon in 1839. It has been an annual event ever since, but now lasts for five days. All the finals are on Sunday.听

5. It's called "The Royal Regatta" after Prince Albert's visit in 1851. Since then the reigning monarch has always agreed to become the royal patron.听

6. There are 19 events in total. Six classes of race for eights and five classes for fours. There are four for quadruple sculls. Plus races for coxless pairs, double sculls, men's and women's single sculls.

7. The regatta is run by stewards. There are about 55 of them. The regatta owns all the land where the hospitality tents and car parking is located. It costs 拢2 million pounds to put on and is paid for by members. There is no commercial sponsorship or financial backing.

8. Every year the regatta infrastructure is completely removed. That means between September and March there is no trace of the event.听听
