It's Birmingham's largest one day event. Organisers estimate that 100,000 revellers took to the city streets on Sunday 13th of March 2005, to watch the two mile long parade.

More than 40 floats entertained the crowds, they included a bar room on a lorry, holy shrines and a wake scene on wheels, complete with mourners and deceased. Dancers in colourful costumes, walkers with banners, musicians and marching bands also paraded along the city streets in the cold but dry weather.听

People decked out in green, gold and orange lined the streets and filled the terraces of Selfridges to watch the procession, before moving on to Millennium Point for a free seven hour concert.

Local Irish talent appeared on the Millennium Point stage as well as pop acts Triple Eight and Kristian Leontiou.

"I love this day." said Len Cale, who was dressed as St Patrick, and is one of the parade's organisers. "I'm not Irish but this is a day that proves once and for all, that all cultures, all colours and all religions can come out and enjoy an absolute cracker of a day.

"The warm heartedness of the people who are here makes up for the lack of sunshine. St Patrick's day is always a memorable day in Birmingham."

Laura Grigg, Director of the Birmingham St Patrick鈥檚 Day Parade commented: 鈥淚t鈥檚 hard to believe how far we have come in such a short time.听It鈥檚 only ten years since Father Taaffe led the first parade of 5,000. Today we have a world class annual event that the city and its Irish can be proud of.鈥
