A decade after we last read about Katniss Everdeen in Mockingjay, the third book in the Hunger Games series, Panem is calling once more.

A new book has been released, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes – but this one is set 64 years before events in the first of the original series.

It’s a common theme for books, films, television shows and even computer games – exploring characters’ backstories prior to the original works. They’re known as prequels – a portmanteau (the combining of two words' sounds and meanings to create a new word, such as brunch for breakfast and lunch) of the Latin pre, meaning before and the word sequel.
