Professional sport brings its own brand of nerves and excitement, but those feelings must increase tenfold when representing your country on the international stage.
As the eighth Women鈥檚 World Cup gets underway in France, stars of the Scotland and England squad have been telling 大象传媒 Bitesize how they deal with stress as they face the prospect of playing under the international spotlight.
Scotland forward and midfielder Christie Murray believes preparation is key, saying: 鈥淵ou always take strength from your training鈥 if you鈥檝e prepared yourself well, you can take confidence from that.鈥
England captain Steph Houghton has a full list of stress-busting preparations, but still leaves room for the work on the pitch: 鈥淚f you train well during the week,鈥 she says, 鈥測ou prepare properly, you train hard, you eat the right things, you get a good sleep - I think that鈥檚 half your work done.鈥
鈥淚 think I keep everything light,鈥 says England forward Nikita Parris, who also knows the importance of changing room morale. 鈥淚鈥檓 quite a humorous person, so I don鈥檛 ever get too flustered around the situation that I鈥檓 going into. I鈥檓 the one who makes jokes around the changing room before the games and stuff, just to make sure the girls are not nervous.鈥
Scotland midfielder and forward Lana Clelland doesn鈥檛 fear pressure at all. Rather, she鈥檚 the complete opposite. 鈥淚 thrive under pressure,鈥 she says. 鈥淚 feel that I perform better under pressure, so yeah, I actually like it.鈥
England鈥檚 Karen Carney agrees: 鈥淵ou just embrace it. I think pressure鈥檚 what you want it to be鈥 so I just tend to have fun, just go out, enjoy it and remember that playing football is what I鈥檝e done all my life.鈥
Team-mate Lucy Bronze finds listening to music can help tackle pre-match stress as well as putting in the hard work beforehand.
Finally, England forward Fran Kirby believes you shouldn鈥檛 let stress rule you. 鈥淚f you鈥檙e worrying too much about it going into it, then it鈥檚 going to be on your mind but we鈥檝e done a few things on camp that takes is out of our comfort zones a little bit. Hopefully we鈥檒l be in a good stead going in to the World Cup, being able to deal with that.鈥
