What would you say if someone told you that you鈥檝e eaten a beaver鈥檚 anal glands?

You鈥檇 probably tell them they鈥檙e bonkers. But, if you鈥檝e ever happened to eat vanilla ice cream then there's teeny, tiny chance you've eaten castoreum. This additive is derived from, you guessed it, secretions from a beaver鈥檚 butt. It's not as widely used in food these days, but can still be found in some perfumes.

It鈥檚 not the only strange ingredient that crops up in our food - from sheep sweat to shellac, many of our favourite treats contain things many would rather not know about. They鈥檙e completely safe in the quantities that are approved to be in our food, and their constantly under review to ensure that this is the case, but knowing what they are might make some people queasy.

Let鈥檚 put the strength of your stomach to the test - see how many you can get right.
