But it鈥檚 important to make that time count. We鈥檝e asked our experts to explain why a gap year can be a valuable experience, and how to make the most of it.

"A lot of young people decide to take a gap year, whether that鈥檚 between finishing their school or college at eighteen or whether it鈥檚 after a degree. The advantage, perhaps, of taking a gap year is that it gives you the opportunity to think about what you鈥檙e going to do in your career, and we all have to work for a very long time, so that鈥檚 important that perhaps you have the opportunity to reflect."
"If you鈥檙e thinking of taking a gap year, it鈥檚 important to consider what鈥檚 going to add value to your CV, afterwards. So, are you going to be able to get some work experience in a particular field, as part of the gap year? Is it going to contribute to your choices, perhaps, going on to university?"
"It is absolutely fine to take that time for yourself, to go out of education and do other things. But it is essential that you do things that are considered to be positive. That could be working, it could be travelling, experiencing the world, it could be developing your skills, developing your experience in lots of different ways. It doesn鈥檛 have to look like a particular thing, but whatever it is, make sure it鈥檚 developing you. Make sure that when someone asks you about it, be it a university or an employer later on, you can talk about the positives, about what you gained from that experience. And that is the absolute key to a gap year."
Gap years: What to think about

- A gap year can give you the opportunity to think about what you鈥檙e going to do in your career. We all have to work for a very long time, so it鈥檚 good to have time to reflect before starting your journey in the world of employment.
- Ask yourself: How is a gap year going to contribute to your CV?
- It鈥檚 important to do things that are considered to be positive and important for your personal development. That way, if future employers quiz you about gaps in your employment or education, you can explain how that time contributed to your growth.
- Some amazing things you could do to develop your skills during a gap year include: doing some work experience, travelling the world, volunteering.
- Some gap year activities, like moving abroad to become fluent in a foreign language, could count towards a degree or help you massively in your studies.
- Think of the practicalities: how are you going to finance your gap year? Is the timing right? What do you want to achieve? How long can you take a break for?
- Some universities will allow you to take a year out. This is sometimes referred to as voluntary suspension, intermission or leave of absence. You must seek your university鈥檚 permission to take a break and return to your studies, and unis are not obliged to grant it to you. It can also affect your student loans and tuition fees, so check with your finance officer before taking any decisions.
- Some companies will also allow you to take a career break. This means you can take some unpaid leave for an extended period of time.
