Poetry is a type of literature which includes poems or compositions written in verses or using language which gives special consideration to pattern.
Poetry is the art of expressing thoughts through feelings and imagination. Some have described poetry as a special way of using words and having fun with words.
The aim of this lesson is to:
- identify different types of poetry and list some of their characteristics
- be able to analyse, discuss and compare two poems

Activity
How about analysing, discussing and comparing two poems?
Follow these steps:
- Read the two poems carefully.
- Compare the two poems and show how they're similar or dissimilar (characteristics/style/metre). Remember:
- to analyse the content, the message and the themes of the poem
- to consider how the poet/poets convey their ideas or create atmosphere in the poems
- to give a personal reaction/viewpoint on the poems
Some questions to consider
- How are the two poems similar or different?
- Do the two poems have the same theme?
- What is the content of the two poems and what are their messages?
- Does the poet transfer the subject in the same way?
- Remember to use quotes to support the above.
- How does the poet convey ideas within the poems?
- How does the poet convey atmosphere within the poems?
- Is the language the same or different in the two poems?
- What stylistic characteristics are being used?
- What metres are being used?
- Remember to use quotes to support the above.
- What effect have the poems had on the reader?
- What's the reader's opinion of the two poems?
- Does the reader like the poems?
- Is the reader able to identify with the message in the two poems?
- Remember to use quotes to support the above.
