Just watching the celebs and pros take to the ballroom floor on a Saturday night is enough to work up a sweat.
But have you ever wondered how much energy it takes them to actually do it?
Exercise experts use something called MET values (short for metabolic equivalent of a task), which is a measure of energy consumed per hour. A MET score of one is the sort of energy you would use when you鈥檙e sitting down watching TV. When the MET value of an activity is multiplied by your weight in kilos, it can tell you approximately how many calories you鈥檒l burn per hour doing that activity.
Most types of exercise have a MET value attached. The MET value for running at seven miles per hour, for example, is 11.0. If you weigh 70 kilos (just over 11 stone), you will burn approximately 770 calories in an hour. But let's say you want to work out how many calories you鈥檇 burn running at that speed for 10 minutes. All you鈥檇 have to do is divide 770 by six, which would leave you with 128.3 calories.
