What to expect in Year 5

As your child goes into Year 5, they will further develop their English and Maths skills.

They'll learn to vary their sentence types and take on more challenging and vivid texts to read.

They'll practise more complex calculations and increase their mathematical fluency and confidence.

In Year 5 your child will work with increasingly larger numbers. This will include recognising numbers up to one million and the ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide numbers containing up to 5 digits.

• Your child will be introduced to concepts such as prime, square and cube numbers.
• They will use their understanding of multiplication and division to calculate a percentage of an amount.
• They will encounter more problems involving factors and multiples.

A great place to start is to build up confidence with the place value of 4 digit numbers

To prepare for Year 5, your child will need to be as secure as possible in the basics of place value, and multiplication and division, as this forms the groundwork for these new concepts. Consider revising:

• Ordering numbers up to 100,000
• Multiplying 3 digit numbers
• Division using written methods

Children will be expected to build on their knowledge of fractions to solve harder problems.

• Your child will work with mixed numbers (combinations of whole numbers and fractions).
• They will continue to work with decimals including comparing, ordering and rounding.
• They will solve multiplication, addition and subtraction problems involving fractions and decimals.

RecapAs children go on to work with fractions using more operations, it's a good idea to make sure they are as secure as possible by revising things that help reinforce their knowledge of what fractions are and how they work. Some suggestions for revision are:

• Equivalent fractions and decimals
• Comparing and ordering decimals
• How to simplify fractions

In Year 5 children will be asked comprehension questions when they study texts to check how well they’ve understood them.

• Your child will continue to develop their inference skills.
• They will prove thorough understanding of texts by making informed predictions.
• They will discuss in depth a variety of types of texts.

Children will benefit most from reading as much as possible. In Year 5 they will be expected to understand the features of a wide variety of different fiction and non-fiction texts. A good place to start is to learn about:

• Fiction and non-fiction
• Retrieving and summarising information
• Types of poem

In Year 5, your child will further develop their writing skills.

• They will formulate different sentence types in order to achieve particular styles and effects.
• They will learn why it is important to proofread their work and check for errors.
• They will learn about the importance of figurative language in their writing.

A great place to start is by recapping expanded noun phrases.

Before your child starts in year 5, it may be a good idea to recap some of the grammar and punctuation covered in year 4.
