This year marked the first time decorations have been put up in London鈥檚 West End to celebrate and recognise the city鈥檚 Muslim community during Ramadan.
During the holy month, Muslims fast, which involves not eating or drinking during daylight hours.
However, the question of whether Islam is celebrated and represented fairly in the media, remains.
How are Muslims represented in the media?
A 2021 report by the Centre of Media Monitoring 鈥 part of the Muslim Council of Britain, suggests there are still issues which need addressing.
The study, which focused on research between 2018-2020, found that 47% of clips broadcast about Muslims, presented them in a negative light. The study also found, when looking at misrepresentation online, the majority of it, 87%, came from news reporting.
Has Muslim representation improved?
We have however seen some more positive representations of Muslims in the media in recent times, with Marvel casting its first Muslim hero in Ms Marvel, and computer game The Sims creating Muslim characters.
Why is representation important?
Representation matters. It is important for all people, of all backgrounds to see themselves properly represented - online, in the news or on TV and film. The media we consume can have a big influence on what we think, our beliefs and how we interact with and perceive others.
