If you鈥檝e never been running before and fancy trying, starting with a short distance and working your way up could be the perfect goal to work towards.
It鈥檚 not about trying to do it as fast as you can, but about building up your stamina over the course of several weeks.
If you are into your running stats, we鈥檝e got just the quiz for you. Can you crunch the numbers to work out these distances, speeds and times?
Distance, speed and time
Here鈥檚 a quick reminder of how to use the distance, speed and time equations.
- Distance = Speed x Time
- Time = Distance / Speed
- Speed = Distance / Time
One easy way of remembering these formulae is to put them in a triangle. Distance goes on top, with speed and time below. The horizontal dividing line reminds you to divide, whilst the vertical one reminds you to multiply.
Let鈥檚 work through an example.
Question: If you want to run five km in exactly 30 minutes, how fast do you need to be running in km/h?
In this case, you鈥檙e being asked to calculate speed. To do that, you need to divide the distance by the time. You鈥檙e looking for the km/h so the time value is 0.5 (30 minutes is half of an hour). You already know that the distance is 5km. To calculate the speed, you divide 5km by 0.5 to give the answer 10km/h.
Got it? On with the quiz!
