The shape and nature of different performance spaces and stages affect the way that plays are staged and performed. Think carefully about the audience experience and what they see.

Using the stage

Upstaging

Upstaging - One actor stands 'upstage' in front of the other on stage

If someone stands upstage of you then they鈥檒l be dominant. This is because you鈥檒l have to look away from the audience to connect with them. Don鈥檛 let that happen by accident. If someone is upstage centre and almost everyone onstage is looking at them, it must be deliberate, eg when they鈥檙e a king being crowned.

Crossing

Crossing - Dotted line shows an actor 'crossing the stage' diagonally

If you walk across the area to a significantly new position you cross the stage.

Clearing

Two actors on stage - one blocking the other from the audience鈥檚 view

When you stop, make sure you鈥檙e not blocking someone, especially someone important, from the audience鈥檚 view.
