Adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing can be applied to mixed number fractions. Each has its own method that helps make sure the numerator and denominator are treated correctly.
Watch this video to learn about multiplying fractions.
When multiplying fractions, multiply the top numbers (numerators) together and multiply the bottom numbers (denominators) together, then simplify or it is sometimes easier simplify first.
Example
Calculate: \(\frac{4}{5} \times \frac{5}{6}\)
Method 1
Multiply then cancel:
\(= \frac{{4 \times 5}}{{5 \times 6}}\)
\(= \frac{{20}}{{30}} = \frac{2}{3}\)
Method 2
Simplify first, then multiply:
\(= \frac{{4 \times 5}}{{5 \times 6}}\)
(Cancel both 5s with 5 ,cancel the 4 and 6 with 2)
