Top tips for filming and editing a moving image media text:

  • Make sure you know how to use your equipment and that it is compatible with the editing software you are going to use
  • Make sure that you record high quality sound. Poor sound really reduces the quality of a film. Use appropriate microphones for the weather conditions if you are shooting outdoors. Some sounds and sound effects are best added in post-production.
  • all the locations where you want to film before you start filming. You might need to ask permission to film in certain locations and you need to make sure that locations won鈥檛 be too difficult for the cast, crew and equipment to get to.
  • Be organised and make sure that you stick to your schedule.
  • Use actors who are reliable and be clear when directing your cast.
  • Always refer back to your storyboard to keep you on track.
  • Stay alert, concentrate, and always film more footage than you think you might need so you can be flexible when editing.
  • Avoid any really difficult camera shots and or in and out quickly as this could disorientate your audience.
  • Keep a record of so that if you have to break filming a scene, you can be sure that your actors are wearing the same clothes, the same objects and in the are present, and that the weather is similar.

Keeping a record of continuity means that you can check that costumes are still the same even if you take a break during filming.

Evaluation

Whether you are creating a print based text or a moving image text, it鈥檚 really important to evaluate your work. You can do this by taking note of what went well and what wasn鈥檛 so good during your production.

It鈥檚 important to think about why particular elements didn鈥檛 go well and to consider how you might do them differently the next time. Try to get feedback from your audience. What did they like about it? What didn鈥檛 they think worked? You can include their feedback in your evaluation.
