A paralysed man (Matthew 9: 1–7)

On this occasion Jesus healed a person because of the faith of others - the men who brought the paralysed man to Jesus on a bed. Jesus said to the paralysed man, “Courage my son, your sins are forgiven.”

In Jesus’ time people thought that sickness or disability was a punishment from God for committing sin. The , who were present at the time, were very shocked because they thought that Jesus was claiming to be God or to have the power of God. This was blasphemy in their eyes. They believed that only God can forgive sins, they were angry that Jesus was claiming to have the same power as God.

Jesus replies to their thoughts by saying, “I will prove to you that the has authority on Earth to forgive sins.”

Jesus says that he has the authority to forgive sins and then proves it by healing the paralysed man. He calls himself Son of Man – a safe title for him to use. He tells the man to get up, pick up his mat and go home. The people were amazed at the miracle and praised God.
