Questions that ask you to describe
When answering a describe question, you should make statements containing relevant facts which answer the question. This type of question will allow you to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding.
Your answer may give a number of straightforward points or a smaller number of more developed points, or a combination of both. You must provide more than an outline or list of facts to gain marks.
Sample question
Describe factors that affect the amount of energy received at the Earth's surface. (6 marks).
Sample answer: Lighter snow/ice covered areas at the Poles have a higher albedo and reflect more radiation. (1 mark) and darker forest areas absorb radiation from the sun. (1 mark)
At the Tropics, the sun鈥檚 rays have less atmosphere to pass so less energy is lost through reflection and absorption. (1 mark)
Due to the curve of the Earth, the sun鈥檚 rays are spread over a larger surface area over the Poles resulting in less energy. (1 mark)
Due to the tilt of the Earth, there is no insolation at the poles during the winter solstices as the Earth is tilted away from the sun. (1 mark)
Tropical areas receive insolation all year round as the sun shines directly overhead in the Equatorial and Tropical regions throughout the year. (1 mark)
