Questions that ask you to analyse

When answering an analyse question, you should identify parts of a topic and refer to the links between, or impacts of, a number of factors.

You will be awarded analysis marks for using your knowledge and understanding, or a source, to identify relevant components (such as a theory or an idea) and clearly show links between different components, their similarities and contradictions, and possible consequences or implications.

This type of question will test your higher order skills, as you have to link various aspects together.

Sample question

Analyse the soil-forming properties, which lead to the formation of a Podzol soil. Your answer should refer to soil characteristics such as horizons, colour, texture and drainage. (7 marks)

Sample answer: a Podzol soil is found in areas of coniferous forest usually on the steep slopes (relief) of upland areas or heather moorland, the needles create a thin black layer of Mor/acidic humus. (1 mark)

There is little humus because trees do not shed needles every year and needles break down very slowly (time). (1 mark)

Well-defined horizons are present due to the lack of soil biota/organisms to mix soil. (1 mark) An iron pan develops in the upper B-horizon due to precipitation exceeding evaporation impeding drainage. (1 mark)

The lower A-horizon is ash-grey in colour because iron and aluminium oxides have been leached out by acidic rainwater. (1 mark). The B-horizon is reddish-brown with a denser texture due to downward leaching. (1 mark). The C-horizon is made-up of parent material, generally weathered rock that has not been broken down due to cold, dry climate. (1 mark)
