The EarthStructure of the Earth

The structure of the Earth comprises of the crust, mantle, outer core and inner core. The crust and upper part of the mantle are broken into tectonic plates. Read through this GCSE Chemistry revision guide to explore detailed explanations and diagrams of the structure of the earth and plate tectonics.

Cross-section showing structure of the Earth

The Earth is almost a sphere. These are its main layers, starting with the outermost:

  • crust 鈥 relatively thin and rocky
  • mantle 鈥 has the properties of a solid, but can flow very slowly
  • outer core 鈥 made from liquid nickel and iron
  • inner core 鈥 made from solid nickel and iron

The Earth鈥檚 lithosphere is the rigid outer layer that is made up of the crust and the part of the mantle just below it. The lithosphere is made up of a mixture of minerals.
