School children - iron, sodium and calcium

Vitamin A

This is important for:

  • healthy brain development
  • healthy skin
  • healthy eyesight development

Iron

Iron is required to prevent iron deficiency anaemia.

Sodium

Sodium intake should be limited – children should take only a small amount of salt in meals as too much can be harmful to their developing kidneys.

Children aged 6 years and under should have no more than 1.2g of sodium per day.

Children aged 7 to 10 years should have no more than 2g of sodium per day.

Calcium

Calcium is required for the development of strong teeth and bones. This is important as children are losing their milk teeth to make way for adult teeth.
