Maths questions
Don鈥檛 forget to take a ruler and calculator into the exam.
Maths questions often start with command words like 'Calculate', 'Determine', 'Estimate' and 'Measure'. They will then include blank space for you to show your working.
When an answer to a maths question is marked:
- full marks are given for the right answer (but it鈥檚 wise to show your working so you can check your answer)
- marks are given for working, including substitution and rearrangement
- 'errors carried forward' are taken into account
'Errors carried forward' is what happens if a later answer depends on an earlier answer, and you get the earlier one wrong. You could still get full marks in the later answer if your working is correct but you use the incorrect earlier answer.
If your answer has many decimal places or figures, make sure you give it to an appropriate number of decimal places or significant figures. You may be asked to give units. This may earn you an additional mark, so don鈥檛 forget to check whether you need to do this.
Maths questions might ask you to plot or complete a graph or table. When you draw a graph, make sure you:
- plot each point accurately
- draw a best fit straight line or curve
You may be given a grid with axes and scales already given. Sometimes you may be given an empty grid for you to supply your own axes. When you do this:
- put the independent variable on the x-axis and the dependent variable on the y-axis
- make sensible scales so that the plotted points cover at least 50% of the area of the graph
- label the axes with their quantity and unit, eg time (s)

Question
The alkane, C15H32, undergoes cracking. An alkene, C6H12 and an alkane, C3H8 form.
Construct the balanced symbol equation for this reaction. [1 mark]
OCR Gateway Science, GCE Chemistry, Paper J248, 2016.
C15H32 鈫 2C6H12 + C3H8 [1]
Sample question 2 - Higher
Question
Methane, CH4, undergoes incomplete combustion.
Write a balanced equation in which the incomplete combustion of methane produces water vapour, and equal amounts of carbon and carbon monoxide, CO. [3 marks]
This question has been written by a Bitesize consultant as a suggestion to the type of question that may appear in an exam paper.
4CH4 + 5O2 鈫 8H2O + 2C + 2CO or
2CH4 + 2陆O2 鈫 4H2O + C + CO
- correct formulae [1]
- equal balancing numbers for C and CO on right hand side [1]
- (correct formulae) correctly balanced [1]

Question
When propane reacts with oxygen, energy is given out.
Propane transfers 50 kJ/g when it burns.
A propane burner is used to boil 200 g of water to make a cup of tea
The initial temperature of the water is 15掳C.
How many grams of propane are needed to heat this water? [5 marks]
Use the following equation:
energy transferred (J) = 4.2 J/g掳C 脳 mass of water (g) 脳 temperature change (掳C)
OCR Gateway Science, GCE Chemistry, Paper J248, 2016 - Higher.
The following are vaild points that could be included in your answer. It is important that you do not bullet point your answer but write your sentences in full.
- temperature change = (100 - 15) = 85掳C [1]
- energy transferred = 4.2 脳 200 脳 85 = 71,400 J [1]
- 50 kJ/g = 50 脳 1000 = 50,000 J [1]
- mass of fuel = 71400/50000 [1]
- = 1.43 g or 1.428 g [1]
