DivisionDividing with a single digit whole number

A number can be divided to two decimal places by a single-digit whole number or by multiples of 10, 100 and 1000 using a standard written format and without a calculator.

Dividing with a single digit whole number

There are several techniques which can be used when dividing by a single digit whole number.

Using factors: example 1

Divide \(1920\) by \(8\,(1920 \div 8)\)

As \(2 \times 2 \times 2 = 8\) therefore to divide \(1920\) by \(8\):

\(1920 \div 2 = 960\)

\(960 \div 2 = 480\)

\(480 \div 2 = 240\)

Therefore \(1920 \div 8 = 240\)

Using factors: example 2

Divide \(348\) by \(6\) (\(348 \div 6\))

As \(2 \times 3 = 6\) therefore to divide \(348\) by \(6\):

\(348 \div 2 = 174\)

\(174 \div 3 = 58\)

\(348 \div 6 = 58\)

A similar approach can be adopted for dividing by \(4\) (divide by \(2\) then divide by \(2\) again) and \(9\) (divide by \(3\) then divide by \(3\) again).

For some more complex divisions a more formal method is needed.
