China's role in UN Security Council

Political influence

The Security Council is the part of the UN responsible for peacemaking and peacekeeping as well as international sanctions. As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, China has a very influential role.

There are five permanent members of the council (USA, China, Russian Federation, France, UK). They have the power to vote against, and effectively veto, any Security Council proposal put forward.

China has used its veto nine times in the last ten years. Eight of these vetoes were over Syria and one over Venezuela.
