are used instead of a to avoid repeating it, eg 驴Que libro te gusta? (Which book do you like?) could be answered with the demonstrative pronoun 茅蝉迟别 (this one).

The forms esto, eso and aquello can be used for a general idea, eg esto me parece fascinante (this seems fascinating to me), eso no me interesa (that doesn't interest me).
