FertilisersFountain experiments

There are two types of fertilisers: natural which is made from plant and animal waste, and artificial which is man-made. By using fertilisers, farmers are able to grow more crops on a field.

Fountain experiments

The properties of ammonia can be shown in a fountain experiment.

An upturned round-bottomed flask contains ammonia gas. Two tubes enter the flask through a rubber bung. The first tube connects to a syringe full of water. The end of the second tube is submerged in a beaker of water and universal indicator.

A few drops of water are injected into the flask and they dissolve some of the ammonia gas. This decreases the pressure in the flask and sucks in the water from the beaker. The indicator turns blue upon contact with the ammonium solution.
